API FAQ

What is "weight"?

Each API request costs a certain weight. Most endpoints cost 1 weight, historical data costs 2, and expensive operations like news search cost 3. Your plan determines how much weight you can use per minute.

Can I upgrade or downgrade?

Yes. Manage your subscription anytime from the billing portal in your API console, where you can switch plans or cancel. Plan changes are handled securely through Stripe.

What happens if I hit my rate limit?

You'll receive a 429 response with a Retry-After header indicating when you can make your next request. Limits are per minute, so you can spend your full weight allowance at once.

Do I need both Premium and an API plan?

No. Premium is for the web experience (ad-free, portfolio tracker). API plans are for programmatic access. They are separate subscriptions, so choose whichever fits your needs, or both.

How far back does the history actually go?

Further than anyone advertises, and these are the counts the API actually returns rather than what sits in the database. Gold is 14,425 daily bars from October 1966 and silver 14,488 from the same month. Copper runs to 9,776 bars from 1988, platinum and palladium to roughly 5,800 each from 2005. Pro covers the most recent 5 years of that; Ultimate returns all of it, which is close to six times more data on gold and silver. Visible supply history goes back to 1992 on Ultimate.

Can I use this commercially?

Yes, on every plan including Free. Build a product on it, sell that product, and serve your own customers with one key. There is no separate commercial licence and no cap on your end users. The only thing we do not allow is reselling access to the API itself, meaning proxying our endpoints as your own or redistributing the raw data as a competing feed.

Paid API plans are governed by the API Terms of Service, which cover what you may do with the data, rate limits, billing and availability.
