MCP servermetals data inside your AI assistant

The MetalCharts MCP server gives Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients 13 tools: live and historical prices in any currency, unit or karat, conversions, and the exchange data the API is known for. It runs at https://api.metalcharts.org/mcp. Clients such as claude.ai and ChatGPT sign in with your MetalCharts account; the rest use an API key.

Connect

Add it to your client

Clients that sign in need only the URL. For the others, replace mc_live_YOUR_KEY with a key from the API console.

Tools

The 13 tools

Every tool is read-only and maps to one API endpoint, so its plan limits and weight are that endpoint's.
get_spot_prices

Live spot prices for metals (XAU, XAG, XPT, XPD, HG, ALI, NI, ZN, PB, JBP, CO, LC, UXA) with 24-hour change, high, low and an indicative bid and ask. Quote in another currency, per gram/kilo/tola, or a gold karat with currency, unit and karat. Each quote states its currency and unit.

get_price_history

Daily, weekly, monthly or intraday OHLC history for one metal, oldest first. Gold and silver daily history goes back to 1966. Converts each point at that day's ECB rate when currency is set. Returns at most `limit` of the most recent points.

convert

Convert an amount between a metal, a currency and a mass unit: 10 g of gold in euros (from XAU to EUR, unit g, amount 10), how much silver 1000 INR buys (from INR to XAG, unit g), EUR to JPY, or grams to troy ounces. Live, or as of a past date.

get_exchange_rates

ECB reference exchange rates for 32 currencies against a base, live or on a past date.

get_comex_inventory

COMEX registered and eligible warehouse stocks for a metal (gold and silver back to 1992), as a daily series, the latest report, or the latest per-depository breakdown. Pro plan.

get_comex_depository_flows

Each COMEX depository's daily metal movements as CME reports them: previous stock, received, withdrawn, adjustment and today's stock, registered and eligible. Filter by depository name. Pro plan.

get_cot_positioning

Weekly CFTC Commitments of Traders positioning for a metal: managed money, producers, swap dealers and open interest. type=overview gives the latest week for every metal. Pro plan.

get_shanghai_premium

Shanghai Gold Exchange prices against Western spot: the Shanghai premium for gold and silver, with VAT-inclusive and ex-VAT values. Pro plan.

get_india_premium

MCX India gold and silver prices against Western spot, as a premium. Pro plan.

get_sge_fixings

SGE AM and PM benchmark fixings (gold in CNY per gram from 2016, silver in CNY per kg from 2019), as a series or the latest. Pro plan.

get_lbma_fixes

The LBMA Gold Price (AM and PM), Silver Price, and Platinum and Palladium Prices (AM and PM), in US dollars per troy ounce or converted to another currency at each day's ECB rate. type=latest gives the newest fix for every metal. Pro plan.

search_instruments

Search the catalogue of about 1,100 instruments (metals, commodities, crypto, ETFs, indices) to find the symbol another tool needs. Symbol spaces differ by endpoint: gold is XAU for prices and history.

get_usage

The API plan behind this key, its limits (per minute, per month, history depth) and usage so far this month. Free to call.

FAQ

MCP server questions

Does the MCP server cost extra?

No. It uses your API plan, and each tool call counts against it exactly like the API request behind it: a price lookup costs 1 weight, a history lookup 2. Checking your own usage is free.

Which plan do I need?

Any, including Free (200 weight a month, live prices and 30 days of daily history). Tools for exchange data such as COMEX inventory, CFTC positioning and the Shanghai premium need Pro; on a lower plan they answer with the plan required, which the assistant can pass on.

What can an assistant answer with it?

Questions like "What is 22-karat gold per gram in rupees?", "How much has silver moved this year?", "Are COMEX registered silver stocks falling?" or "How are managed money traders positioned in gold?". It can also convert between metals, currencies and units.

Does it work in claude.ai or ChatGPT connectors?

Yes. Add https://api.metalcharts.org/mcp as a custom connector and the client sends you to MetalCharts to sign in and approve it. It uses your account's API plan, the free plan included, and you can disconnect it at any time in the API console, where its usage shows next to your keys.
