What is rough rice?

Rough rice (also called paddy rice) is rice in its unprocessed form with the husk still intact. The RR1 futures contract tracks US rough rice prices. After milling, rice becomes the staple food for over 3.5 billion people worldwide, particularly in Asia, where it provides 20% of dietary calories.

What drives rice prices?
