Rice Price Chart

About Rice (RR1)

Rough Rice futures (RR1) track the CBOT benchmark for unmilled rice, the staple food for over half the world's population. Priced per hundredweight (cwt), rice is the most important food crop in Asia and a critical component of global food security.

Rice Price Drivers

Rice prices are influenced by global supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical events, weather patterns, currency fluctuations, and economic indicators. Futures contracts traded on exchanges like COMEX, NYMEX, and ICE provide price discovery, while physical market conditions and inventory levels drive spot pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is rough rice?
Rough rice (also called paddy rice) is rice in its unprocessed form with the husk still intact. The RR1 futures contract tracks US rough rice prices. After milling, rice becomes the staple food for over 3.5 billion people worldwide, particularly in Asia, where it provides 20% of dietary calories.
What drives rice prices?
Rice prices are influenced by monsoon rainfall patterns in Asia, export restrictions from major producers (India, Thailand, Vietnam), global stockpile levels, El Nino/La Nina weather patterns, and government procurement and subsidies. India's export policy is a particularly powerful price driver.
How is rice different from other grain markets?
Unlike wheat and corn, most rice is consumed domestically and only about 10% enters international trade. This thin trade makes prices sensitive to export bans. Most trading occurs between Asian countries, and the CBOT futures contract has relatively low volume compared to corn and wheat.
