Data Methodology

Where does this price data come from?
Silver spot prices are sourced from Metals.Dev, a professional metals data provider, with automatic fallback to gold-api.com for redundancy. Prices are updated in real-time during market hours, ensuring you always see the latest data. All prices reflect the latest available mid-market spot rate.
How is the silver spot price determined?
The silver spot price is derived from the most actively traded futures contracts on COMEX (CME Group) and the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). The spot price represents the current market price for immediate delivery, calculated from near-month futures contracts adjusted for carry costs. During off-hours, prices reflect OTC (over-the-counter) trading across global markets, providing continuous 24-hour price discovery.
How is the unit conversion calculated?
The displayed price uses a conversion multiplier of 14.5833 applied to the per-troy-ounce spot price. One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams.
When are precious metals markets open?
COMEX futures trade Sunday through Friday, 6:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET (23 hours per day with a 1-hour break). The London Bullion Market (LBMA) operates Monday to Friday with two daily fixings: AM fix at 10:30 AM London time and PM fix at 3:00 PM London time. Outside of formal exchange hours, precious metals continue to trade on OTC markets globally, meaning prices can move 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Our data reflects these continuous market movements.

Understanding Silver Priced by the Pound

Silver markets quote prices in troy ounces, but many people sizing up an inheritance, a flatware set, or a stack of bullion think in pounds. The conversion trips people up because there are two different ounces: one avoirdupois pound equals 16 standard ounces or 14.5833 troy ounces, not 16. The price above multiplies the live spot price by 14.5833 to show the true value of a pound of pure silver.

A pound of silver is a substantial holding. In physical form it equals roughly fourteen and a half 1 oz rounds, a single 1 lb poured bar, or about $20 face value of pre-1965 US junk silver coins (which contain 90% silver). Poured 1 lb bars are popular with stackers because their premiums per ounce undercut smaller rounds.

Note that a pound of sterling silver (92.5% pure) is worth 7.5% less than the figure above, and a pound of US coin silver (90%) about 10% less. Weighted items like candlesticks contain far less silver than their total weight suggests. For purity-adjusted math, use our melt calculator.

1 pound = 14.5833 troy oz: the price above is live spot x 14.5833
Troy vs standard ounce: a troy ounce (31.103 g) is about 10% heavier than a standard ounce (28.35 g)
Sterling adjustment: multiply the per-pound price by 0.925 for sterling flatware or jewelry
Junk silver: roughly $20 face value of pre-1965 US coins contains about one pound of pure silver
1 lb bars: poured pound bars typically carry lower premiums per ounce than 1 oz rounds

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a pound of silver worth today?
The live price above shows the current value of one avoirdupois pound (453.59 grams) of pure silver: the spot price multiplied by 14.5833 troy ounces. It updates in real time with the silver market.
Why is a pound of silver only 14.58 ounces of value?
Silver is priced in troy ounces, which weigh 31.1035 grams, while the everyday avoirdupois pound is built from lighter 28.35 gram ounces. Dividing 453.59 grams by 31.1035 gives 14.5833 troy ounces per pound. Using 16 instead of 14.58 overstates a pound of silver's value by almost 10%.
How much is a pound of sterling silver worth?
Sterling is 92.5% pure, so multiply the per-pound price above by 0.925. A pound of sterling flatware also typically sells to dealers at 70-90% of that melt value, and pieces with weighted handles or non-silver parts contain less actual silver than their scale weight suggests.
What does a pound of silver look like?
Common forms include a single poured 1 lb bar (about the size of a small candy bar but much denser), fourteen or fifteen 1 oz rounds, or roughly $20 face value of pre-1965 US dimes, quarters, or half dollars. Silver's density makes a pound surprisingly compact.
