Data Methodology

Where does this price data come from?
Gold spot prices come from market data feeds that track the primary global exchanges, with an automatic fallback to a second feed. Prices update in real time during market hours, and each one is the latest available mid-market spot rate.
How is the gold spot price determined?
The gold spot price is derived from the most actively traded futures contracts on COMEX (CME Group) and the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). The spot price represents the current market price for immediate delivery, calculated from near-month futures contracts adjusted for carry costs. During off-hours, prices reflect OTC (over-the-counter) trading across global markets, providing continuous 24-hour price discovery.
How is the 9K gold price calculated?
Pure gold is designated as 24 karat (24K), meaning 99.9% gold content. 9K gold contains 37.5% pure gold, with the remaining 62.5% consisting of alloy metals for durability. The 9K price is calculated as: 9K price = 24K spot price x 0.375 (37.5% purity). Note that retail jewelry prices will be higher than this melt value due to craftsmanship, design, and dealer margins.
When are precious metals markets open?
COMEX futures trade Sunday through Friday, 6:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET (23 hours per day with a 1-hour break). The London Bullion Market (LBMA) operates Monday to Friday with two daily fixings: AM fix at 10:30 AM London time and PM fix at 3:00 PM London time. Outside of formal exchange hours, precious metals continue to trade on OTC markets globally, meaning prices can move 24 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Understanding 9K Gold

9 karat gold (9ct in the UK) contains 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% other metals, mostly silver and copper. It carries the 375 hallmark, the lowest gold standard UK hallmarking recognises. In the UK, Ireland and Australia it's the everyday karat for wedding bands, signet rings, chains and earrings. In the US, the minimum for karat gold is 10K, so 9K is rare in American stores.

To calculate the 9K gold price, multiply the current 24K spot price per gram by 0.375. If pure gold trades at $100 per gram, 9K gold has a metal value of $37.50 per gram. That's the raw melt value, before any retail markup or making charges.

With less gold than any other common karat, 9K is the cheapest solid gold and one of the hardest, so it stands up to daily wear. The tradeoff is a paler yellow than 14K or 18K, and the high share of copper and silver means some 9K pieces darken slightly over time. A polish brings them back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 9K gold?
9K gold is an alloy of 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% other metals, usually silver and copper. The 9 means 9 parts gold out of 24. It's stamped 375, 9K or 9ct, and it's the lowest standard that can be hallmarked as gold in the UK, where it's widely used for rings, chains and earrings. It's common in Ireland and Australia too.
How much is 9K gold per gram?
9K gold is worth about $49.88 per gram in melt value at today's price: the 24K price of $133.01 per gram times 0.375 (37.5% pure).
What is the 9ct gold price per gram in the UK?
At today's price, 9ct gold is worth about £37.78 per gram in melt value, or £1,175 per troy ounce. That's the US dollar price of $49.88 per gram converted at 0.7575 pounds per US dollar (European Central Bank reference rates for October 2, 2026). A buyer's offer is a percentage of melt value, so ask each one what percentage they pay.
What is the 9ct gold price per gram in Australia?
At today's price, 9ct gold is worth about A$71.88 per gram in melt value, or A$2,236 per troy ounce. That's the US dollar price of $49.88 per gram converted at 1.4411 Australian dollars per US dollar (European Central Bank reference rates for October 2, 2026). A buyer's offer is a percentage of melt value, so ask each one what percentage they pay.
How to calculate 9K gold scrap value?
Multiply the weight of your 9K gold in grams by the 24K gold price per gram, then by 0.375. That's the melt value. For example, if 24K gold is $100 per gram and you have 10 grams of 9K, the melt value is $375 (10 x $100 x 0.375). A buyer pays a percentage of melt, so ask what percentage they pay before agreeing a price.
How much is a 9K gold ring or chain worth?
Weigh it in grams and multiply by today's 9K rate of $49.88 per gram. At that rate, a 3 gram ring holds about $149.63 of gold and a 10 gram chain holds about $498.78 of gold. A buyer's offer is a percentage of that melt value, and signed or antique pieces can be worth more sold whole than melted.
What does the 375 stamp mean on gold?
375 is the fineness mark for 9K gold: 375 parts pure gold per 1,000, or 37.5%. It's the same purity as a 9K or 9ct stamp. A full UK hallmark also carries a sponsor's mark and an assay office mark next to the 375.
Is 9K gold real gold?
Yes. 9K gold is 37.5% pure gold by weight, and it's sold and hallmarked as gold in the UK, Ireland and Australia. In the US the lowest karat that can be sold as gold is 10K, so 9K is rare in American stores. It holds less gold per gram than any other common karat, which makes it the cheapest solid gold.
Is 9K white gold or rose gold worth the same as yellow 9K?
Yes, for melt value. White, rose and yellow 9K all contain 37.5% gold, and the color comes from the other 62.5%: more copper for rose, and white metals such as palladium for white. A buyer pays the same per gram of 9K whatever its color, and the rhodium plating on white gold adds nothing.
9K vs 10K gold: what is the difference?
At today's price, 9K gold is worth about $49.88 per gram and 10K about $55.46 per gram, so gram for gram 9K carries 89.9% of the gold in 10K. 10K is the lowest karat sold as gold in the US, while 9K is the everyday standard in the UK, Ireland and Australia.
